José Eduardo Levi studied Biological Sciences at the University of São Paulo, Brazil.
Obtained his Master (1993) and PhD (2000) degrees from the same university, working first on the association of human papillomaviruses and penile carcinomas and later on the development of a PCR assay for the screening of blood donors for hepatitis C virus RNA.
He is a researcher at the Tropical Medicine Institute in São Paulo since 1995, applying molecular tools for the diagnosis of viruses, and has published 150 papers in peer-reviewed journals.
He is currently the head of the molecular biology unit at DASA laboratories, the largest Brazilian clinical pathology lab, and a member of the transfusion-transmitted infectious diseases committee from the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT). Current research focus on flaviviruses, cell-free DNA and cervical cancer screening.
